About the author
Byron D. Brooks
What if being born in prison was not a death sentence—but the spark of a radical journey toward transformation?
Byron D. Brooks—known artistically as MoSoul—is a national scholar, speaker, and social architect whose life story moves beyond testimony into blueprint. Raised by his great-grandparents, Roscoe and JoEsther Corner, whose Love and wisdom shaped his earliest theology and philosophy, Brooks was not molded in ivory towers but in the margins of America—where homelessness taught him the fragility and fire of the human spirit.
Like the Black revolutionaries who walked before him, he emerged not bitter but burning—with truth, purpose, and an unshakable calling.
Today, Byron stands as one of the boldest voices of his generation, a living reminder that greatness doesn’t grow from comfort but from conviction. He has taught and led at Ferris State University, the University of Michigan, and Yale—not only as an educator, but as a Liberator. His work transforms classrooms into healing spaces, campuses into catalysts for justice, and forgotten lives into futures filled with possibility.
A proud member of Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Inc., and a trusted voice on Governor Gretchen Whitmer’s Black Leadership Advisory Council, Brooks is rewriting the narrative for Black communities across Michigan—challenging racial disparities, advancing equity, and centering Black lives in policy and practice.
As a scholar, speaker, and Black Liberation theologian, his message is rooted in a Gospel that dares to speak Love in the language of the oppressed. His leadership in the National Day of Service Initiative earned him the Presidential Lifetime Achievement Award from the Biden-Harris Administration, underscoring his devotion to service not just in theory, but in action.
Byron D. Brooks—MoSoul—is not here for applause. He is here, as Baldwin declared, “to disturb the peace”—until that peace belongs wholly to the People.

I got the pleasure to take a deep dive into this book and I have to say that it is truly one of the most impactful books I’ve read this year. It takes an in-depth look into the relationship we have with ourselves and our culture but it’s done in a way that we don’t often see. I don’t want to give away too much, but I highly recommend this book.
